Local Foods in Summer
What’s in Season? Every season, in collaboration with Terra Masia Ibiza, we will be producing a graphic to show the range of products growing in Ibiza and Formentera. You can download the calendar here.
Summer is here! It’s time for bright coloured beach wear, sun screen, and long summer nights. What better way to cope with the changing season than a diet based on seasonal foods. Summer is the biggest growing season of the year. You will find the biggest variety and the best fruits and vegetables during these warm months.
Summer fruits, like Watermelon, Melon and Plums, have a high water content which helps us stay hydrated. For a short period, here in Ibiza we have a type of pear referred to as ‘San Juan pear’ so called because it appears around the end of June coinciding with the feast of San Juan.
We also have a wide array of summer vegetables that can be eaten either raw, grilled on the bbq, sautéed, roasted, or steamed. These include bell peppers, courgettes, marrows, summer squash, aubergine, beetroot, carrots, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, potatoes. Gazpacho is a popular cold soup served in summer and can be made with a range of summer fruits and vegetables like watermelon, tomato, celery, cucumber.
When we eat foods that are in season, they’re not only more affordable, but they’re also fresher and packed with the highest amount of flavour and nutritional value.
By purchasing local foods in season from local farms, your food ‘euro’ goes directly to farmers, you eliminate environmental damage caused by shipping foods thousands of miles and you’ll enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Plus, local, seasonal produce just tastes better.
