Eating local benefits
YOUR HEALTH…with seasonal, nutrient-packed food
IBIZA’S HEALTH…supporting local farmers, the landscape and the local economy
OUR PLANET’S HEALTH…reducing carbon emissions and other externalities
We are devouring the planet’s resources at great speed. As the world’s population grows so does the rate at which these resources will be exhausted. Food production is responsible for much of the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change. And it is also one of the reasons for the loss of biodiversity and destruction of ecosystems, such as tropical rainforests. Changing our eating habits is an easy way to reduce our impact on the environment and, at the same time, live a healthier life.
Currently only 2% of the food consumed in Ibiza grows in Ibiza. To maintain a more sustainable diet for the planet, we have to choose Locally Grown Food.
Ibiza’s soil is rich in minerals allowing for the growth of a diverse range of crops across the year. In Spring, nature provides us with detoxifying, cleansing vegetables to reset our bodies including artichokes, asparagus, fennel, avocadoes, mustard greens and radishes. In Summer, Ibiza is blessed with colourful fruits and vegetables like the ‘melo erico’ (a local variety of honeydew melon), Ibiza’s sweet watermelon, figs, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, potatoes, grapes. Autumnal fresh produce includes leafy greens, pumpkin, squash, cabbage, mushrooms, almonds, quince, pine nuts, carob. In winter, we can find potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, onions, kale, celery, oranges, lemons. Ibiza’s fields also boast numerous medicinal plants and herbs including rosemary, thyme, chamomile, lavender, mint, juniper. The digestive liqueur, known as Hierbas Ibicencas, is a concoction of around 17 to 25 different herbs that grow on the island.
Other traditional local products include Ibiza’s lamb, sobrassada (a raw, cured sausage), flao (a pastry with cheese and local mint), wine, olive oil, and fish. Moreover, a range of other products are processed on the island using local produce including goats’ cheese, gin, vermouth, herbal infusions, paprika, spirulina, carob syrup, carob beer, carob liqueur, carob chocolate, beauty products.
In recent years, a number of entrepreneurs have set up shop on the island producing high quality artisanal food and beverage products including coffee, beer, kombucha, tonic water, kimchi, sauerkraut, ice cream.
